May has represented Parbold on the Borough council since 1996. She has served as a Parish Councillor for a similar time.  She is currently the Borough Council's Champion for Older People and Chairman of the Borough Council's Environmental Overview and Scrutiny committee.  She is vice chairman of the Local Strategic Partnership Executive and a governor of two local schools.  She was Chairman of the Council in 2006/07.
