New Skelmersdale branch launched as Conservatives expand locally

Conservatives in Skelmersdale have formed their own local party branch to build upon recent successes in the town.

A launch event was held at Tanhouse Community Centre, on Ennerdale, where party members met with local residents with an interest in supporting the branch.

Guests enjoyed a buffet and drinks reception, and a raffle was also held to raise money for the newly-formed branch.

The event was supported by key people in the local party including Jenni Mayer, Chairman of West Lancashire Conservative Association, and Cllr Adrian Owens, Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group on West Lancashire Borough Council.

Mrs Mayer said: “I am delighted we have formed a branch in Skelmersdale, and was encouraged that even people who aren’t party members came along.

“Conservatives have worked hard here and this resulted in us last year securing our first councillor in the town for around 30 years. In addition, our Tanhouse candidate Cindy Miller came within a few votes of beating Labour in the Borough Council elections in 2008, so there is a feeling that the tide is turning.”

Adrian Owens, the Conservative candidate at this year’s General Election, added: “I campaigned hard in Skelmersdale and brought a number of prominent party figures here, including Eric Pickles, who is now Communities Secretary; Grant Shapps, who has since been appointed Housing Minister and Andrew Mitchell, the International Development Secretary. They always got a warm reception from people who felt that Labour has taken Skelmersdale for granted for far too long.

“I believe that with the formation of a Skelmersdale branch, we will go from strength to strength here.”

The inaugural meeting of the Skelmersdale branch is due to take place on August 9 at Tanhouse Community Centre. If you would like more information, please call 01695 572306/07985 470583 or email skelmersdaleconservatives@gmail.com
