The Conservative borough council is launching a programme to clear a sticky menace from our streets over the coming weekends.
West Lancashire Council staff will be using specialist equipment to remove chewing gum dropped on pavements and town centres across the borough.
Over coming weekends, council workers will be out on the streets clearing the gum, going through the borough’s towns of Ormskirk, Skelmersdale and Burscough.
Cllr Adrian Owens, who made the request for the programme to start, said: “I’m delighted this programme is underway as it will help clean up the streets this summer.
“People in our towns have a responsibility to keep the streets clean. I would urge them to use litter bins provided to throw their chewing gum away.”
The council spent about £12,000 four or five years ago cleaning chewing gum off the streets and it was felt that it was time to carry out some spot cleaning once more although the problem is not so severe as a few years ago.
