On Thursday, Theresa May MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions and Nigel Waterson MP, Shadow Minister for Work and Pensions visited Ormskirk and chatted to shoppers in the market about Conservative plans for older people.
The two shadow ministers were accompanied by Adrian Owens, Conservative General Election candidate and local councillors and party officers.
Adrian Owens said, “Gordon Brown has let down older people. He raided private pensions, doubled council tax and did nothing to stop people having to sell their homes to pay for residential care. Today, too many pensioners are living out their days without the dignity and security they deserve.”
The Conservative candidate commented that the response from Ormskirk shoppers was generally positive. “We have set out our plans to improve the state pension by re-linking it to earnings, work with local councils to freeze council tax for two years and end the scandal of people having to sell their homes to pay for residential care. We will also protect the winter fuel allowance, free TV licences and free bus passes.”
