A project to create a large-scale community woodland on the old landfill sites at Platts Lane and Mill Dam Lane in Burscough has moved a step closer with detailed site investigations underway on woodland layout, infrastructure works e.g. footpath/cycleway/picnic area locations, management systems, access arrangements.
Burscough councillor, Ruth Melling has been following the project development closely. She said, “So long as the site investigations don’t turn up anything untoward, this project looks set to transform this area into a great community location and facility. Local residents will be consulted on their ideas before firm plans are made, but the use of compost produced from household waste to improve the soils on the old landfill sites so that the woodland can be created is an imaginative way of benefiting from the waste.”
The Woodlands from Waste project is a partnership led by the county council and a private sector partner with borough council support which aims to increase Lancashire’s low woodland coverage; offset carbon dioxide emissions; and find an economic use for all the compost produced from household waste.
