Local residents continue to see improvements to local leisure facilities, thanks to West Lancashire Community Leisure Trust working with its partners, Serco and West Lancashire Borough Council.
Burscough and Skelmersdale have seen investment of around £350,000 into new gym equipment and facilities near the close of 2009. Further investment into facilities is planned for mid 2010 and there is continued support from the Amateur Swimming Association to provide £25K of funding for free swimming lessons over the next 3 months. This sustained investment would not have been possible under Borough council management due to tight financial constraints. The investment has led to increased usage at the leisure facilities. Last year showed an 8% increase in growth, an extra 65,000 visits, making over 1 million visits in total. The Trust continues to improve and review procedures whilst providing value for money and top notch leisure services.
Other good news from January’s board report highlights further energy efficiency improvements which have shown gas savings of 17% and electricity savings of 15%. Along with the 1% increase in swimming numbers at Park Pool, and the financial input from Serco to ensure that the government's ‘free’ swimming initiative for over 60's could go ahead, the leisure centre partnership is altogether something West Lancashire can be proud of in such difficult economic times.
